Orienteering in three steps

Orienteering is an outdoor sport in which you find control points marked on a map, in order, and reach the finish. You choose the route — the best thinker, not just the fastest runner, wins.

  1. Take your map

At the start you get a map with your course printed on it. The purple triangle is where you start.

  2. Find the controls

Each circle is a control. Find the orange-and-white flag and punch.

  3. Run to the finish

The double circle is the finish. See your time and compare routes with friends.

Which route would you choose?

Over the hill or round on the path? Decide in three realistic scenarios and see the distance, climb and estimated time.

The right start for you

Family, team or class? Running or walking? Three questions and we’ll suggest a course and programme.

Answer three questions and we’ll suggest the best way for you to start. Your answers are not sent anywhere.

1. Who are you coming with?
2. How do you feel about running or walking?
3. Map and compass experience?
