Orienteering terms explained: control, kite, contour, handrail, attack point, SI card, sprint, relay and more. English–Turkish.

Aiming off Turkish: Bilinçli sapma
Deliberately aiming to one side of a control on a linear feature.
Area that shall not be entered (olive green) Turkish: Girilemez alan (zeytin yeşili)
ISOM/ISSprOM 520: private gardens, yards and similar areas that must not be entered; entering means disqualification.
Attack point Turkish: Saldırı noktası
Easy-to-find feature near the control from which you navigate carefully to it.
Baseplate compass Turkish: Taban plakalı pusula
Classic compass with a rotating housing on a transparent base.
Bearing Turkish: Azimut (yön alma)
Direction between two points measured with a compass.
Catching feature Turkish: Yakalama çizgisi
Clear feature beyond the control that tells you if you overshoot.
Contour Turkish: Kontur (eş yükselti eğrisi)
Brown line joining points of equal height; usually at 5 m intervals.
Control (control point) Turkish: Kontrol (kontrol noktası)
A point on the course marked in the terrain by an orange-and-white flag and on the map by a purple circle.
Control code Turkish: Kontrol kodu
Number on the flag and in the descriptions confirming the right control.
Control descriptions Turkish: Kontrol tanımları
Table showing which feature each control is on and where the flag is.
Control flag (kite) Turkish: Flama
Three-sided orange-and-white marker, split diagonally, that marks a control.
Course Turkish: Parkur
The start, controls and finish set for a class or group.
Finish (double circle) Turkish: Finiş (çift daire)
Purple double circle showing the finish.
Forking Turkish: Çatallanma
Different control combinations in relays so runners cannot simply follow.
Generalisation Turkish: Genelleştirme
Selecting, simplifying, displacing and exaggerating detail so the map stays legible.
Handrail Turkish: Tutamak
Linear feature you follow: path, stream, fence, forest edge.
Index contour Turkish: Ana kontur
Every fifth contour, drawn thicker.

Leg Turkish: Bacak
The section between two consecutive controls.
Long distance Turkish: Uzun mesafe
Long legs, big route choices and endurance.
Magnetic north lines Turkish: Kuzey çizgileri
Parallel lines on the map pointing to magnetic north.
Middle distance Turkish: Orta mesafe
Technical format with frequent changes of direction.
Mispunch (MP) Turkish: Eksik kontrol (MP)
A missed or out-of-order control; the result is invalid.
MTBO Turkish: MTBO
Mountain-bike orienteering.
Orienteering Turkish: Oryantiring
Outdoor sport of visiting control points in order using a map and, optionally, a compass.
Orienting the map Turkish: Haritayı yönlendirme
Holding the map so it matches the direction of the terrain.
Out of bounds Turkish: Yasak bölge
Area marked with purple hatching that must not be entered.
Permanent course Turkish: Kalıcı parkur
Course with fixed markers or QR codes that can be run at any time.
Punching Turkish: Kayıt almak (punch)
Recording a control visit by using the chip at the unit.
Relay Turkish: Bayrak yarışı
Race in which team members run one after another.
Route choice Turkish: Rota seçimi
Deciding which way to go on a leg based on distance, climb, terrain and risk.
Runnability Turkish: Koşulabilirlik
How the terrain affects running speed; five classes in ISOM, shown with white, yellow and shades of green.
Scale Turkish: Ölçek
Ratio between map and ground; at 1:10,000, 1 cm = 100 m.
Score orienteering Turkish: Skor oryantiringi
Format where controls can be visited in any order to collect points in a set time.
Shadow Turkish: Gölge
Experienced person who follows a beginner without interfering.
SI card (chip) Turkish: SI çip
Electronic punching chip (SPORTident) storing control codes and times.
Split time Turkish: Ara süre
Time taken on each leg.
Sprint Turkish: Sprint
Short, fast format in parks, campuses or towns; 1:4,000–1:5,000 maps.
Start triangle Turkish: Start üçgeni
Purple triangle on the map showing where the course starts.
Thumb compass Turkish: Baş parmak pusulası
Compass worn on the thumb of the map hand for quick map orientation.
Thumbing Turkish: Başparmak tekniği
Keeping your thumb next to your position on the map as you move.
TOF Turkish: TOF
Turkish Orienteering Federation.
